Marvel Comics announced today that in Feburary the title of Ms. Marvel, formerly that of Carol Danvers, will be taken on by Kamala Khan a teenage Muslim girl. G. Willow Wilson, who wrote the the Vixen mini-series a few years back, will be pen the title. She is a convert to Islam.
Both Marvel and DC have had Muslim heroes before. DC’s Batman of France, Nightrunner, was Muslim as was Dust in Marvel Comics.
According to the Times,
Kamala, whose family is from Pakistan, has devotedly followed the career of the blond, blue-eyed Carol Danvers, who now goes by Captain Marvel, a name she inherited from a male hero. When Kamala discovers her powers, including the ability to change shape, she takes on the code name Ms. Marvel — what Carol called herself when she began her superhero career.
The character will struggle with more than just her powers - she will also struggle with her faith and her conservative family. The book goes on sale 2/16/14.
